Signs It’s Time to Repair or Replace Your Asphalt Driveway
May 21, 2020 12:10 pm Leave your thoughtsYour driveway is something you walk on and drive on nearly every day, but often gets overlooked in terms of maintenance. Most people probably don’t think too much about their driveway until something becomes a problem. It may seem like over night that several cracks, potholes, and other wear and tear have appeared. However, it’s probably been accumulating over time and you just didn’t notice until now. Damage to your driveway can occur for several different reasons, including weather-related problems such as freezing, or motor oil and gas from your vehicle. Some issues will be cause for more concern than others, and only require repairs. However, depending on the age of your driveway, it may be time for a replacement. Keep reading to learn the common signs to look out for, and how to address them.
5 Signs Your Driveway Needs to be Repaired
Below are some of the more minor issues that’ll likely only require repairs to your asphalt.
Small Cracks That Don’t Connect
Small cracks that are less than ¼ inch wide can easily be repaired and should be tended to before they spread and become a bigger issue. When water freezes and expands in the crack, particularly in the winter, the cracks will become deeper and wider, making it harder to take control of.
A Pothole
One or two potholes is an easy fix when addressed quickly. Doing repairs in a timely manner will also help to prevent further damage from occurring.
Sunken Areas
If you notice that your driveway is sinking low, particularly lower than a garage, repair work can help to make it level again.
Faded Color
Faded of lighter coloring than your original asphalt is a sign of age, but is nothing to worry about. You can correct the color and prevent damage by adding a seal coat.
Crumbling Edges
If the edges of your driveway are starting to wear too thin, you’ll see crumbling at the side of your asphalt. A quick repair service can fix this and prevent the damage from spreading.
4 Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Asphalt Driveway
If you notice any of these larger-scale issues, a replacement will typically be the best option for your driveway.
Multiple Potholes
If you have more than one or a few potholes, and they’re deep enough to affect the foundation, water will gather and lead to more costly damages. It’s most likely time for a replacement.
Spiderweb Cracks
There’s a big difference between having a few cracks in your driveway that are not connecting, and a large span of spiderweb cracks. This refers to cracks that are interconnected and cover a majority of your driveway. Unfortunately, when it gets to this point, your driveway is typically beyond repair. A full driveway replacement will be your best bet in this case.
Drainage Issues
Have you noticed that your driveway or yard isn’t draining properly and is directing water towards the foundation of your home? This is a serious issue and can cause much further damage to your home. In most cases, this is a telltale sign that a driveway replacement is necessary.
Multiple Repairs
If your driveway is aging above 15-20 years and is in need of multiple repairs, it may be more cost-effective and efficient to replace your driveway instead. While asphalt does have a long lifespan, it will eventually need replacement.
